Wooden Elephant
During WW1, Amherst housed the largest POW camp in Canada. The German prisoners, many of whom were pulled from their homes and families in Saskatchewan, as German immigrants to Canada, created intricate wood carvings to pass the time. Many homes in Amherst still have these carvings, and the museum has several pieces displayed as a permanent exhibit.
