Interment Camp

  • Interment Camp

What do you do with old, outdated factories?

That was the problem facing the buildings that existed on the west side of the train tracks in Amherst. Then World War 1 arrived.

A ship of German speaking Ukrainians captured in the Mediterranean Sea when their boat was captured. They were brought to Halifax, and the Amherst Internment Camp was born. Several young men from Town enlisted to serve as guards instead of going overseas.

In all, over 800 men were interred at Amherst, Some were from this first group. More were Ukranian immigrants from other parts of Canada who were considered 'enemy aliens'. The story of the way they helped reinvent Amherst and area, integrating with the community is a story of fellowship and forgiveness in War. The museum has many toys and other wooden articles made by the prisoners. We also have a 551 acre artifact in Nappan.

Come and see this legendary story, and meet a legendary character who was interred here.
